The History of the Engagement Ring
The meaning of the engagement ring has changed over the centuries. In ancient times, the ring finger was considered directly connected to the heart, so the ring on the left hand served as a symbol of endless love.
In the Middle Ages, the ring was presented as a serious promise of marriage – it was not to be worn merely for fun. Later, twin rings emerged, where the gentleman wore his ring until the wedding, then passed it on to the woman, who wore it as a wedding ring.
Today, the engagement ring is an integral part of the wedding announcement: In Germany, the man usually chooses and buys the ring, while traditionally only the woman wears it.
How much should an engagement ring cost?
Determine your ring budget based on your monthly net income. As a rule of thumb, you should plan for at least half a month's salary – if you have savings, you can even set a whole month's salary as an upper limit. After all, buying an engagement ring is a one-time, romantic investment whose cost quickly fades into the background.
If you are at the beginning of your career, make sure that the cost of the ring is in a healthy proportion to your income. While in the USA 2-3 months' salaries are often considered a guideline, men in German-speaking countries spend on average less than 1,000 Euros.
Remember: A ring for about 1,000 Euros over a shared lifetime of 50 years means a cost of only about 5 cents per day – a small price for great lifelong happiness!
